Shuck me

 Shuck me like corn

I’m so wrapped up
I’ve got
Something more to discover
Yellow bits of goodness
Eat around my worms
Take time to remove each little strand
So you can enjoy me cleanly
If you don’t,
I taste sour
It takes time to get the best of me
But now you know
so take care
Carry floss to remove the pieces of me
That get stuck in your teeth
It’s the nature of loving me that
You have to deal with
It’s manageable
If you can handle a little mess
Don’t act like I didn’t warn you
That my handle can snap off
I’m still quite
Tasty
Though broken off at the root
So I can’t feel where I come from when I’m with you
Throw my roots in the garbage but
I still remember the very dirt
From which I sprang
The frosty cold nights I almost couldn’t thrive in
Yet here I am
Full grown corn
Ready to be enjoyed if you can follow my instructions
If my water comes to a boil
Wait a few minutes to try me again
You know
I was fertilized with poison
But may still be nutritious
If you rinse my skin
Underneath I may still be good for you
The dirt was good and
The seed was okay
Shuck me like corn
I’m so wrapped up
Warm and cuddled but huddled away
Peel back my layers
And make me stay
